There is no such thing as a silly question!
Frequently Asked Questions
I totally get that it’s a big decision to get your business or service online, and you’ve probably got lots of questions for me. I honestly believe that no question is a silly question, so if I haven’t answered your question below, please get in contact with me and I’ll be sure to help the best I can!
Keen to get started?
I need a website. How long will it take to build?
It all depends on which package you have chosen and the size of your project. However, my Little Lemon and Big Lemon websites are handed over to the client 4 to 6 weeks from when I start the project.
However, to achieve this, I will need all your content and imagery 5 days prior to your start date.
Do I need to purchase a domain and hosting before you start?
Yes, but it’s an easy process so don’t worry. I need you to have purchased a domain name, usually the name of your business, before we start working on your website. This will become your websites new address. Your websites host is basically the real estate (or home) on the internet where your website and all our information live.
Having a domain name and a host is essential for your website to exist on the internet and we recommend purchasing both from Siteground because their services are very reasonably priced, their customer service is second to none, and they offer free SSL
Why do you use WordPress?
WordPress is open source content management software and currently powers around 25% of all websites on the Internet. The project is contributed to by tens of thousands of developers all over the world and is growing from strength to strength. WordPress allows us to develop flexible and customisable websites to modern standards and observes web development best practices.
Furthermore, the community of web developers that use WordPress reaches far and wide and allows us to tap into this collective intelligence and bring that wealth of experience to your project.
How many revisions will I get?
Once your home page is designed I will share a link and get feedback from you so that any tweaks can be made to that page before I roll it out across the website.
One the entire website is finished you will get one round of changes included in the initial quote. If you change your mind about anything or it goes outside of the scope of work then I am happy to send you a further quote.
Is there anything that is not included?
My packages do not include the purchase of a domain name or host provider, both of these require monthly or yearly payments and you will need to sign up to them first. Again, we recommend Siteground for hosting because they host our site and we’ve had exceptional customer service.
Also not included in the cost of my packages is paid plug-ins that require monthly payments, they are up to you to buy. For example, if we suggest extra security plug-ins for e-commerce sites, these may incur monthly fees. However, the installation and set up of these plugins are included in some of our packages or as optional extras. This is also something we’ll discuss in more detail with you when we’re at the plug-in stage.
Where can I download free stock images?
https://www.pexels.com/ – IMPORTANT: Some images are Sponsored Photos and will take you to another website. You need to pay for these ones.
https://stocksnap.io/ – IMPORTANT: images with the Shutterstock watermark and the featured star in the corner are premium images you need to pay for. All others are free.
https://pixabay.com/ – IMPORTANT: images with the Shutterstock watermark are premium images you need to pay for. All others are free.
Umm ... What is a plugin?
Chances are you might not have heard this term before if you’re new to the tech side of websites.
Basically, a plug-in is a software component that adds specific features to your website. For example, if you have decided to choose a WordPress site there are plug-ins you can add that optimise your website for certain things such as SEO optimisation, resizing images, adding calendars or special forms etc.
Are there any ongoing costs once my website is completed?
Once I’ve handed over your website to you, you will get one month of my maintenance package free. After that, there are no monthly bills from Digital Lemonade unless you chose to continue with a maintenance care package.
You’ll only have the fees attached to plug-ins (see above) and your domain and hosting fees.
My competitively-priced maintenance website packages are where I maintain all the fiddly tech stuff that you’d rather not have to deal with. This is a great option for those who are time-poor or would prefer not to attempt technical stuff.
It is absolutely vital that you keep your website secure and up to date.
How do I pay and in what currency?
As an Australian-based business, payment must be paid in Australia dollars.
Digital Lemonade requires a 50% deposit upfront and the balance on the day your website is launched. However, for some of my larger packages, I am prepared to discuss payment options.
If you decide to take on our monthly maintenance package, then you ask that you set up a monthly direct debit with me.
Will I be able to update my own website?
Yes, because of the way we have designed your site you will DEFINITELY be able to update your own website. You will be provided with a video tutorial to show you how to add pages, change text and images and update colours and fonts.
Also, we will give you one month of FREE website care support according to your package.
What happens after my website is lauched?
Once your website is launched, I will provide 60 days of support to make sure any bugs have been ironed out and that you are confident using your new website. After this, I encourage you to subscribe to one of my ongoing website care plans to make sure your website is looked after and maintained. These website care plans include updating your software, regular backups, security checks and making sure your website is online.
What is the process if I want to add some features to my website while you are building it?
Whilst I like to be flexible and responsive to your needs, I also like to deliver what I promise within the time frames and budgets we have allowed. If you ask me to add new features to your website while I am building it, I will most likely ask why. If we all agree that your new request will help achieve our objectives then I will be more than happy to oblige.
If your new feature is something you would like to add to your website but is not directly tied to your original objectives then I will suggest to schedule it for a second iteration of the website once it has been launched. This will require a new proposal.
Who do I contact if something goes wrong with my website or I can't figure something out?
Provided you subscribe to one of my ongoing website care plans, I will be your first point of call should something go wrong with your website. I will determine whether it is something the hosting company needs to fix or something that is covered by your website care plan. I will provide you with a video tutorial to assist you in using your website once it is launched.
How long will it take to appear at the top of Google?
The time it takes for your website to appear on page 1 of Google depends on a number of factors, including the search phrase (keywords) people are using to find your website and the number of other websites that are also targeting those keywords. Nobody can truly say how long it will take for your website to appear at the top of search engine results pages (including people who actually work for Google), however, there are a number of factors that can improve your chances.
Building your website on WordPress is a good start as WordPress has some great Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) fundamentals built-in. Creating unique and interesting content on a regular basis for your site is also crucial to increase your visibility on search engines. Launching your website and then forgetting about it is a sure-fire way to get lost amongst the noise.
I’m happy to chat with you about your search engine strategy if we haven’t already. Just get in touch.
How will I know if anyone is visiting my website?
Google Analytics software will be installed on your website and I’ll show you how to log into your Google Analytics account where you can see a range of stat about your website including the number of visits, page views and the amount of time people are spending on different pages of your site.
Your website care plan reports will also provide you with a detailed analysis of your site’s performance and any recommendations on how to improve.
